The owner / operator and guide of Classic Alaska Charters is
Captain Rob Scherer. Captain Rob is U.S.C.G. certified and is a
registered outfitter/guide with the United States Forest Service and
Alaska Department of Fish and Game. He has been professionally
guiding in Alaskan waters since 1985.
Ever since he was 3 years old, he's been fishing and exploring
the world outside his Midwest hometown. Frequent trips with his
Grandfather to the remote areas of northern Wisconsin instilled
a love of the land, and appreciation for nature. Graduating from
UW-Stevens Point in 1984 he headed straight to Alaska to fulfill
a dream proposed by his Grandfather many years before and about
the time he passed away. With a degree in Resource and Fisheries
Management, the US Forest Service accepted him for seasonal employment
as an Assistant to Fish Biologists, first, the Thorne Bay Ranger
District and then over to the Misty Fiords National Monument
Wilderness District. The Thorne Bay Ranger District on Prince of
Wales Island specifically requested his services because of his
unique experience in habitat restoration and enhancement. His
work proved very valuable during the middle 80's when the USFS
and the logging industry were trying to rectify serious
procedural issues in the logging industry practices and the USFS
flawed timber management monitoring programs. Restorations made
by Rob back in the middle 80's are still viable today!
An Expert on the Misty Fjords
The Fish Biologist of the Misty Fjords National Monument
Wilderness Ranger District, Mike Scott, heard about the various
successes produced by Rob and requested his services to catalog
& inventory lakes, streams and rivers within the 2.8 million
acres of Wilderness of Misty Fiords. Rob had the distinct
pleasure of working the entire Misty Fiords Wilderness area by
boat, floatplane, and helicopter over two seasons of intense
field work. Rob's determination to succeed and meet the goals
proposed by his superiors saved the USFS (and taxpayers)
hundreds of thousands of dollars, while providing enduring
inventory analysis of the freshwater ecosystems found throughout
the Wilderness.
Owner & Operator of Classic Alaska Charters,
The Ultimate Fishing Charter
Working in the private sector offered more genuine possibilities
of adventure and exploration and when the opportunity of owning
& operating a charter business presented itself in 1990, Captain
Rob was all over it! Since then he's developed Classic Alaska
Charters into the most enduring overnight charter service in
Ketchikan. Beginning in 1990 there were scores of other
overnighters and competition was congenial in a full field of
operation. Today, Classic Alaska Charters is THE ONLY original
overnight operation still in existence, and Captain Rob enjoys
full seasons and tremendous success of providing lasting
memories for clients all over the world!
An Experienced Alaska Fishing Guide
His educational background, USFS Alaskan field experiences, and
the 36,000 actual hours of guiding on the water, in wilderness
areas, ensures that clients will be provided with the highest
level of knowledge and experience for quality, successful
adventuring in Southeast Alaska. Along with all the above, his
innovative fishing techniques, and latest high tech equipment,
takes you to where the fishing action is! Captain Rob is also a
wildlife and nature photographer and can guide you into
spectacular wilderness photo opportunities, from scenery to
wildlife of every kind found in the Ketchikan area.
